Secure Remote Desktop

BC Project: FY24-01
Date of Policy: 11 Jan 2024
Last Updated: 11 Jan 2024 (see Revision Log)

The Data Analysis and Assessment Center (DAAC) coordinates efforts to configure HPC systems with Secure Remote Desktop (SRD) for remote visualization. This is a team effort between DAAC personnel and assigned system and scheduler administrators, as the DAAC lacks sufficient privilege to make system-level changes. The SRD enables an active HPCMP user to securely launch a gnome desktop on many DSRC systems. This desktop is then piped to the user's local workstation (Linux, Mac, or Windows) for display.

Each HPC system shall have the SRD server-side software properly configured and available for use. The DAAC will be responsible for maintaining the server-side software once it has successfully passed beta testing, while the system-level components will remain each DSRC’s responsibility.

Due to technical reasons, SRD is exempt from BC policy FY05-01 (Multiple-Version Software and Modules Usage). The DAAC will maintain the current production version. When a new version is released, it will be released as a beta version and remain the beta version for 30 days. After 30 days users will be notified that the beta version will become the production version in 30 days and the previous production version will no longer be supported

Additional information about SRD may be found at the DAAC website.
